Rose Marie Starke
LFAA June 25, 2019 Meeting
“A lot of my artwork reflects my love of nature, animals, design and letters. With my graphic design, calligraphy and multi media teaching backgrounds, I am able to create in a variety of styles. My work is a personal statement made through the innovation of color, texture and design elements with which I express my moods and ideas. I am hoping the viewer shares some of my inner feelings that inspired me to create my art.”
Growing up in Livonia, Rose Marie Starke attended Kendall School of Design in Grand Rapids, then worked ten years as a commercial artist at advertising agencies. For the next 28 years “Starke’s Studio” became her Farmington Hills homebased free-lance business specializing in design from concept sketches to layout and finished art, often incorporating calligraphy and illustrations. This period included teaching multi media techniques as well as leading workshops on paper marbling, pop up cards and embossing. Rose Marie continued studying locally and out of state, winning logo contests, getting 4 greeting cards published, hand painting Christmas ornaments for a company, calligraphy place cards for the Princess of Monaco and many more unique opportunities.
Paper collage has been her inspiration and focus the last few years which is often incorporated into personalized handmade greeting cards. These collages are created with various unique and textured papers collected over the years with added cardboard, wire, florist paper, ribbon, cat whiskers, sponge pieces, etc., to enhance the intricate details. Shading and highlights are done with pastel or colored pencils. Whether creating ink and calligraphy art or painting with watercolor or acrylic, Ms. Starke’s work reflects little corners of life. Her journey, though always changing, constantly includes a strong desire to network with other artists.
